Things to know before getting dental braces for yourself or your child

For some people wearing braces increases their self-confidence, not to mention having a perfect smile. Many teens almost look forward to getting braces because it signifies a right-of-passage and shows that they are not kids anymore. However, getting dental braces is a lifetime decision that is why as a patient it is one’s duty not just to know the cost for braces but also its advantages and disadvantages.

Dental braces are the most effective teeth straightening appliance. It helps to align teeth to a more organized position and fill teeth gap. Some get it to improve their appearance.

While they are mainly used on children and teenagers, adults can also use them.

There are many types of braces from metal braces to ceramic braces, from tooth-coloured braces to clear braces. Metal braces are the most commonly used and involve brackets that are glued to each teeth. Ceramic braces, on the other hand, are not as visible as metal braces and are a little more expensive and are not as strong as metal braces. These may all be categorized in those that are attached and those that are removable.

However, just like any other treatment dental braces also come with side effects.

The adjustment period may not be easy. It is common for people to have a second thought before getting braces, because of how this dental appliance affects the way they eat and talk. Well, it is part of the deal. You have to go through an adjustment period. During this time, there are lots of changes that will happen and some people may find it more difficult than others.

Braces come with different negative effects on the mouth, simply because of the presence of the metal objects in the mouth. Some of the effects may include difficulty in eating and chewing (most likely you will lose weight) and difficulty in speaking.

Maintaining the health of your mouth is another big challenge for you to face once you get dental braces. When you have braces, you have to make sure that your teeth are thoroughly clean to prevent the formation of bacteria that will damage your teeth and the appliance. You should secure a more specific and advanced toothbrush that will help you clean area in between brackets as well as a mouthwash to keep your mouth fresh.

To maintain the functionality of the braces and to make sure one acquires the best result, you must have frequent visits with your dental professional. From time to time, the doctor will check the status of the braces so it will absolutely affect your schedule. This means that before you get the braces, you have to make sure that your schedule is flexible not to delay the treatment results.

Despite all the disadvantages of braces, they come as an absolute blessing for people who suffer from dental problems like crooked teeth and improper bite. Dental braces will help to straighten your teeth and improve your facial features. The best thing you will do to overcome all the negative effects is to focus on its positive results.

Famous celebrities who have had braces

TOM CRUISE. When you have one of the most famous smiles in the world, how do you improve it without people noticing? Tom Cruise solved this impossible mission in 2002 by wearing (mostly) invisible braces with ceramic brackets. Having just turned 40, Cruise gave his teeth a tune-up for a few months, and then the braces came off before the paparazzi got in his face.

FANTASIA BARRINO: After winning American Idol in 2004, Barrino was all smiles. But apparently she thought she could do better. Fantasia wore the braces for a year or so, at which point her smile became straighter and brighter. But even as late as 2012, Fantasia was seen wearing braces (or at least a retainer) to keep her teeth in line.

GWEN STEFANI. This singer-songwriter and actress was never shy about showing off her braces during the early days of No Doubt. They sure paid off.
