Complete list of essential mobile apps for today’s career woman and mother

Every generation of women encounters its own challenges in various aspects of life. I have often wondered how our mothers managed to bring us up single handedly – husbands off to work  as  the only bread winner,no house help and with an average  of 4 kids in most families. How did they survive without technology?

Now I can ask that because  technology and specifically so, a smartphone has become an essential assistant that helps me juggle my career, raising 3 kids as well as doing things I love doing like meeting with friends, going out, etc.

I am sure, like me, you have often wondered if there apps that can help you as a woman run your life more smoothly whether at work or at home. Well, I have listed some of  the apps that I use daily which will earn you the title of ‘super woman’. Don’t we all want to be on top of things?

I have organised the apps according to the different aspects of our lives that we have to juggle all the time. so go ahead and get your game on.

Parenting

Cozi Family Organiser
Cozi turns all your devices into ultimate family organizers with a shared calendar, shopping lists, to do lists, recipe box, and more everyone can access on the go. If you or your partner have ever missed important dates like birthdays, then this app comes in very handy.

Applock
We are never able to keep our phones away from our kids. This is especially the case when you are at the hospital waiting hall, or travelling or in a restaurant waiting for food. You don’t have to regret giving your child the phone later after they have deleted certain photos or called someone by mistake. This app helps you lock all the apps you don’t want your child accessing (like those embarrassing whats app forwards).

Food meal planner
There are times we just don’t know what to cook for the family. This app helps find and keep favourite recepies.

Google Drive
If you have an Gmail address then this app is part of the packing giving you upto 20GB free storage. Use this to save all those photos and videos that have been taking up all the storage space on your phone. You can still access the photos using the app.

Gmail Calendar
This has got to be the best organiser ever for meetings, events and other important dates. With this, you can plan your meetings as well as synchronise your appointments with those you are meeting by sending them a calendar invite. I like the feature that enables you set a reminder ahead of the meeting just in case you forget. They used to have an sms feature which they scrapped (not sure why)

Evernote
If you are a writer or love writing down your thoughts, then this app comes in very handy. I use it to come up with ideas for articles as well as keeping a diary of our childrens’ milestones. It enables you embedd photos, videos and even audio to your notes which I love.

Pocket
I discovered this app quite recently. If you have reached a point you feel there is more to the internet than just reading social media updates, then this is a very ideal app for you. It enables you store articles you saw but didn’t get time to read so that you can read later, it also has a recommend list where it allows you to follow other people like your friends on twitter or facebook and read articles they have recommended.

My reading and quality of articles I read has increased tremendously ever since I started using it. Look out for my recommendations once you get it.

Office remote
Smartphones have made our office mobile. This app helps you open all manner of attachments (pdf, word, excel).

Amazon Kindle
The Kindle app puts over a million books at your fingertips. It’s the app for every reader, whether you’re a book reader, magazine reader, or newspaper reader—and you don’t need to own a Kindle to use it. Choose from over a million Kindle books from the Kindle Store or enjoy popular magazines like The Economist and Reader’s Digest with high-resolution color images.
What I love about the app is that it does not contain in-app advertising. I used to prefer Aldiko until they recently decided to feature in-app advertising. The last thing I want are distractions when am trying to read a book.

Health, Fitness & Personal Care

Period tracker

Always know when is your next period, fertile and ovulation. Period Calendar, track your period, cycle ,ovulation and the chance of pregnancy, period tracker for women looking for conceive, or birth control.

What to expect
Of all the apps out there on pregnancy tracking, I found this one to be the best. I used it throughout my last pregnancy to track when I was due (I kept forgetting which week I was) as well as to know the changes that my body was going through then and how the baby was developing. I especially liked the video feature.

Lose it
Lose weight the healthy and sustainable way with Lose It! Weight loss has never been easier with our free, best-in-class calorie tracking program. The app gives you the tools you need to track food and exercise, plan meals, and stay motivated to make smarter choices and achieve your goals.

7 minute workout
If you want to lose weight, get a flat tummy & strengthen abdominal muscles, get sixpack, can strengthen your core and tone your abs, with videos on how to perform each exercise. Why I like this app is it has the most appropriate exercises for usual people just like you and me, you can do it quick fit anytime anywhere, it only takes 7 minutes.

Shopping
Although online shopping is yet to really take off especially here in Kenya, there are usually some very nice deals with various sites like Jumia, Kilimall and others that have apps. I am not such a big fan of OLX after I got conned a while back but hey, thats just my experience. Many swear by it.
What I wish there was, was an app that compiles all those sales, discount offers and such from various vendors so that I don’t have to install 10 apps.

Spiritual
Holy Bible
There are many bible apps out there. What I love most about this app is how it has compiled various bible versions, the audio and the best part being that I also get to read the bible in my mother tongue Gikuyu. After I got my mum a smartphone, she could not believe that it had the bible in this version. She has since become the tech savvy woman in church who reads the Kirikaniro (bible in Gikuyu) from her phone. It is also available in various other African languages.

My daily devotional
Daily Devotional is designed to keep you inspired, build your spirit man and help you stay focused.
The App is loaded with inspirational thoughts, concepts, ideas and saying that will keep you charged up all day long.

Lifestyle & Entertainment
Scrabble
There is no better way than to relax as you improve your diction. This app enables you do just that. What I like are the different levels that help you grow your mastery of the game as you learn new words

HelloFood
There are days am sure you just don’t feel like cooking and neither do you want to go out especially if you have young kids and going to a restaurant is a whole exercise that leaves you drained. Well. this app allows you order in from the nearest restaurants around you.

I’d love to hear from you on apps that get you through the day. Talk to me in the comments section.
